Paragraph
Imagine this: You just smashed your revenue goals but are left completely exhausted on the verge of burnout. Kathy Young owns a copywriting business and hit the coveted six-figures of income her very first year in business. But instead of feeling elated by such an incredible accomplishment, in year one no less, she was completely exhausted.
It was about that same time she was introduced to my business and finance program for small business owners, The Blueprint Model. Serendipitous timing. Inside the program she learned how she could cut her workload in half without losing any revenue. With some simple tweaks to pricing and how she worked with clients, within one year she reached her income goals without feeling exhausted or burned out.
In this exclusive case study style interview, learn how Kathy cut her workload in half without losing a penny of revenue and how to prevent burnout! Before The Blueprint Model, I was taking on projects out of fear that I’d leave money on the table. I didn’t take any time off, and even though I had made my first six-figure year ($135K) I was burnt out and wondered what it looked like to have a good profit *and* have more margin in my days.
I joined The Blueprint Model in January 2022. It’s crazy because I actually met one of my closest friends (Rachael Curtis of Rachael Leigh Photography) thanks to going through the curriculum together. She even convinced me to go to a conference and meet her in person that very same year.
Thanks to the BPM, I made a plan to meet her AND even ended the year with a pretty generous bonus that I put toward personal goals (family planning, retirement) while taking most of December off. What’s crazy is that in 2022 I made 10K less than the previous year. But because I managed my money well, more of it came home to me and I took, in total, 6 weeks off of the entire year. That may not sound like much, but coming off a rough 2021, that was huge for me!
It gets even better – my husband and I have been planning for all of 2022 to get pregnant in 2023. And surprise! I’m 11 weeks pregnant 🙂 I looked at my offers again with the BPM to confirm how much I need to make to keep the lights on and realized I could be working a lot less as I ease into a maternity leave in December. So I decided to focus on one project at a time, shifted around my working schedule, and found a way to make about the same amount per month while creating a whole bunch of breathing room in my schedule.
On a day-to-day level, I’ve learned to map out my entire year and literally follow the money plan so I know how much I need to be making per month. Even if I have “slower” months, that’s okay. I’ve got cash reserves and emergency savings to give me peace of mind 🙂 I stay on top of my client-tracker and money date every month so I know how I’m doing/how to adjust when I need to.
I’m running a lean but small ship and pressing pause on some big business goals I had because I’m having my first child. But I’m grateful that I have the tools to know what I need to make to keep the biz going, feel like it’s okay to slow down, and honor my pregnancy journey!
(Shanna here real quick…Kathy just dropped so much gold so let me repeat that again. Tools + permission to slow down + honor the season she is in = the recipe for how to prevent burnout.)
For me, it’s always been that my most high-ticket item may not always be my most profitable. And also that I can find financial freedom by playing around with how my ideal work week, desired time off, and revenue goals meet. They used to all exist in silos in my head, but now I feel more confident with how to work them in my favor.
It’s so cliche because literally everyone says this, but I constantly anchor myself to my motivator of time freedom. Different people’s businesses look different because of their motivations and family situations. So whenever I’m tempted to follow what someone else is doing, The Blueprint Model reminds me to follow the blueprint for MY business and MY season of life.
