One of the greatest honors of my life (other than being a wife to Kyle and mama to Madelyn) is getting to help others build businesses around the life they want to live. Each month we spotlight one of our incredible students and this month I’m beyond thrilled to feature Sarah Bourne Rafferty and her incredible success story in her art business!
A few months ago Sarah reached out to me sharing how she made six figures working just 20-30 hours by defining enough for her personal needs and business expenses. Since “Defining Enough” is a money philosophy I hold near and dear to my heart, I knew I had to have her share how this same philosophy has impacted her own life and business!
Without further ado, Meet Sarah, a cyanotype artist (her beautiful designs are one of a kind!)

Let’s start with some fun stuff! Lightning Round, here we go:
I am an artist working mainly with cyanotype, the oldest photographic process. I create originals, art prints, and products. I am also an online educator and mentor to artists.
Watching silly girly shows like Firefly Lane and Sweet Magnolias while drinking white wine with home + garden magazines
apples with natural peanut butter. Everyday!
I am so proud of this business I have built! My 12-year old self wouldn’t believe it.
I am working on a wallpaper and textile line for Spring of 2023 with a late March/April release! It is a dream project that has taken way to long to finalize.
I LOVE hotdogs!
Just start. (my husband about this business)

Pet snuggles (we have a cat and a dog)
Professional Skateboarder
I think the best thing to have come out of this creative career is the amazing women I have met along the way. I have made so many friends in my adult life that I never thought possible. I think these connections have felt as rich and meaningful as friends from highschool and college. What we are all doing takes a lot of self actualization, a lot of energy and a lot of time – my creative community makes it possible for me to deep a little deeper and keep going.

Shanna had so much to offer that was very clear and incredibly inspiring. I loved how she was able to bring together her finance experience and artist/creative desires and heart. I felt like she was speaking directly to me.
What is enough? (This changed everything for me.)
I use Shanna’s planner like it is my Bible. I record everything, I have monthly start meetings, monthly end meetings, I do my Profit Loss at the end of each month (usually the first few days into the next month) I started recording my time to see how much I actually work, I set goals and return to them over and over. Basically she gave me a structure by which to run my business and I am so grateful.
all of the above!! And also that her perspective is one that balances growth and making money while also understanding that a good life isn’t just the money we make but the time we invest in other things like our families, friends, organizations we love etc.
